AEW World Champion CM Punk suffered an injury during a six-man tag team match at last week’s AEW Dynamite. Later on AEW Rampage, Punk announced that he was injured and needed surgery. However, the exact nature of the injury was not revealed.
Following Punk’s injury, AEW announced the Interim World Championship Eliminator Series to crown an Interim World Champion.

During last night’s AEW Dynamite, they gave an update regarding CM Punk. AEW announced that Punk had undergone successful lower leg surgery. However, his return date is not revealed yet.
AEW Dynamite kicked off with Casino Battle Royale to determine who will face #1 contender Jon Moxley in the main event. Undisputed Elite member Kyle O’Reilly picked up the victory over 20 competitors in the Battle Royale. However, Jon Moxley defeated O’Reilly in the main event of last night’s Dynamite.
Moxley is scheduled to face Hiroshi Tanahashi or Hirooki Goto for the Interim AEW World Championship at Forbidden Door on June 26th.
After CM Punk's recovery, Interim AEW World Champion will face AEW World Champion CM Punk for a Title Unification match.
