CM Punk won the AEW World Championship by defeating Hangman Page at AEW Double or Nothing pay-per-view on May 29th. After winning AEW World Title, Punk teamed up with FTR to wrestle The Acclaimed's Max Caster and The Gunn Club in a Six-Man Tag Team match at AEW Dynamite, and Punk botched a few moves during the match.
However, on the June 3rd edition of AEW Rampage, the newly crowned AEW World Champion announced that he's injured and needs surgery.
"I'm injured, and I need surgery. A couple of things are broken; the biggest one is my heart. Because I love nothing more than performing for all of you," Punk said.
"I'm gonna promise you one thing, I'm not gonna let that doubt creep in, I'm not gonna let it ruin anything, and the get back is gonna be bigger than the setback. I'm a champion for a reason, and I'm going to show you exactly why I will come back bigger, faster, stronger and hungrier than ever before, and god damn it, I will prove exactly why I am the best in the world." Punk said.
According to a latest report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider, CM Punk’s injury is unlikely to heal properly without surgery, and there is no exact date for his surgery.
No word yet on when CM Punk will have surgery on his foot. The word making the rounds is that surgery was the only option as due to the nature of the injury, it likely wouldn't heal correctly without it.
Despite being injured, Punk is not relinquishing his AEW World Championship, but an Interim AEW Champion will be crowned at Forbidden Door. After CM Punk's recovery, Interim AEW Champion and AEW Champion are scheduled for a Title Unification match.
