This year’s Extreme Rules premium live event was well organized under Triple H’s vision. The show featured stipulations for every single match. However, the 2021 Extreme Rules had only one stipulation match.
Finn Balor faced Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship in an Extreme Rules Match at Extreme Rules PLE last year. But Reigns picked up the victory in a controversial fashion.
During the closing moment of the match, Finn Balor climbed the turnbuckle to deliver a Coup de Grâce. However, suddenly ring rope collapsed and Balor fall into the mat. Roman Reigns then hit a Spear on Balor to retain the Universal Title. WWE did not explain the ending of the Reigns vs. Balor match to this day.
During an interview with Josh Martinez’s Superstar Crossover, Finn Balor was asked about the controversial match finish. Balor said there was a plan to explain what happened but it was changed due to Brock Lesnar's return.
I feel like it’s just been left open-ended, and the finish hasn’t been addressed. There was an idea to go a different direction, but then Brock returned, and the direction changed. So that’s something you have to kind of come to terms with and understand in WWE that, there’s always going to be — if one piece of the jigsaw changes, the whole landscape changes. If someone gets hurt, or someone returns, there’s always going to be different ideas and plans in place.
So you just got to be able to adapt to the ever-evolving situation. That’s what we have to do but I feel like the finish of that match has definitely caused some watercooler talk, so to speak, and the fact that we’re still talking about it a year later, is evidence of that, and I feel like in the next couple of months, we should really revisit that and address what happened that night.
We will update you when we receive more details. Stay tuned with The Spotlight.
